Die New York Times hat Jim Davis, Erfinder von Garfield, auf die großartige Website Garfield Minus Garfield von Dan Walsh angesprochen. Und ich muss sagen, es wärmt mir ein wenig das Herz, das Davis offenbar null Probleme mit dem Remix seiner eigenen Arbeit hat:
Mr. Davis, who has been drawing Garfield for 30 years, said that “Garfield Minus Garfield” has actually prompted him to take a different look at his own work. He compared Mr. Walsh’s efforts to the cerebral approach of Pogo, the comic strip by Walt Kelly.
“I think it’s the body of work that makes me laugh — the more you read of these strips, the funnier it gets,” Mr. Davis said. As for Garfield himself, “this makes a compelling argument that maybe he doesn’t need to be there. Less is more.”
Schön, so muss das sein.
Ein wenig komisch finde ich dann aber, dass die Times zwar ein am Rande erwähntes Weblog verlinkt, nicht aber Garfield Minus Garfield selber.
Dafür hat Davis mal die Macher des Anti-Drogen-Kinder-Trickfilms “Cartoon All-Stars to the Rescue” belangt, da diese Garfield angeblich ohne Erlaubnis im Film hätten auftauchen lassen.
Irgendwo hab ich mal gelesen, dass die Strips mittlerweile zum Teil Public Domain seien. Ich konnte gestern aber nichts dazu finden und hab das als Kommentar rausgelassen. Wenn dem so wäre, bliebe dem Herrn Davis ja quasi nichts anderes übrig, als freundlich zu lächeln. ;)
